My overall impression is that Yosemite is extremely slick and has a very well put together look.
Some elements are unfortunately not "good enough" for me though. Some elements give me the impression of not being quite finished.
Issue one: The Menubar.
The new Yosemite menubar is semi transparent and it's completely flat looking. The light theme gives the menubar a discreet drop shadow, while the dark theme completely lacks a drop shadow!
Let me illustrate!
Light theme menubar:
The light theme menubar is as I said semi transparent. It has a white base color and it will take a tinge of the color of the desktop wallpaper as you can see in the picture above. This look is "ok" but it's not good. It's not as clean and polished as I expect from Apple. So I decided to fix that.. :)
Now.. my "fix" is a really ugly hack and it involves a bit of work in a graphics editor (I used GIMP) but it's very straight forward. What I did was I took advantage of the fact that the menubar is transparent and simply edited the wallpaper itself. I added a few gradients up on the top which - with the semi transparent menubar - slightly "shines" through the menubar and gives it a new look.
Like so:
The same modified wallpaper works just as well when using the dark theme of course!
First the original dark menubar which completely lacks drop shadow, it is just a black flat line basically..:
.. and this is how it looks with my modified wallpaper. Note that it's not pitch black anymore, this is because it's semi transparent and my modified wallpaper shows through slightly! Also note the gorgeous drop shadow:
NICE HUH!! :)
Issue two: The Dock.
The new dock is flat. It's ... flat. I'm sorry but this is not very slick and pleasing to the eyes. Not in my opinion.. I know a lot of people love this new look, but I don't.
This is what it looks like:
Now... there is a tool that you can download and install which enables you to quickly change the appearance of the dock, this tool also gives you the option of creating your own custom dock looks!
The tool is called cDock and can be dowloaded here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdock/
I installed it and enabled the old, Mavericks style, dock. Took less than a minute:
I hope you found this post helpful! Let me know if you have any specific suggestions or requests on what I should post in the new Tech section!
